Samui Sandbox Travel Information

Explore the unique island of Koh Samui with Thailand’s new no-quarantine Sandbox Program:

The Samui Sandbox Program accepts:

  • Fully vaccinated tourists coming from overseas who transfer from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Koh Samui or other approved domestic destinations;
  • Fully vaccinated tourists coming from overseas with direct flights into Koh Samui;
  • Children traveling with vaccinated parents or guardians

All travelers must stay at a SHA+ certified hotel or resort

Under the Samui Sandbox Program, travelers must stay at least the first 7 nights in the Sandbox area. After 7 nights, travelers can continue to other destinations in Thailand. If staying less than 7 nights in a Sandbox area, the traveler must leave Thailand immediately and cannot travel to other Thailand destinations.

Pre-arrival & arrival

To travel to Samui, the following requirements and restrictions apply:

  • A Thailand Pass which can be applied for at https://tp.consular.go.th/
  • Negative RT-PCR test results obtained no more than 72 hours before departure
  • A negative RT-PCR test at the airport of the final destination in Thailand
  • Proof that you have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 at least 14 days before traveling to Thailand
  • Travelers 12-17 years of age arriving in Thailand unaccompanied by a parent or guardian must have been vaccinated with at least 1 dose of an approved vaccine and a negative RT-PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure. Those arriving with at least one parent/guardian are exempt from this vaccination requirement, but must have the negative RT-PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure and have a negative RT-PCR test at the airport of the final destination in Thailand
  • Travelers 6-11 years of age arriving in Thailand with at least one parent/guardian are exempt from this vaccination requirement, but must have the negative RT-PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure and have a negative RT-PCR test at the airport of the final destination in Thailand
  • Travelers under 6 years of age, traveling with at least one parent/guardian who has had a negative RT-PCR test result within 72 hours before traveling, are exempt from this vaccination requirement and exempt from the requirement of a negative RT-PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure, but must have a negative RT-PCR test at the airport of the final destination in Thailand
  • Proof that the previous 21 days were spent in an approved country*
  • Confirmation of payment of a stay at an approved accommodation, such as a SHA++ hotel, for at least 7 days
  • Confirmation of prepayment for 2 RT-PCR tests per person
  • Morchana application installed on your mobile phone
  • COVID-19-covering health insurance with minimum coverage of USD 50,000
  • 2 mandatory RT-PCT tests per person a) on ‘Day 0’ or ‘Day 1’, and b) on ‘Day 5’ or ‘Day 6’
  • The days are calculated as follows:
    • Arriving in Thailand between 6:01 pm to 12 midnight, the day of arrival is ‘Day 0’
    • Arriving in Thailand between 12:01 am to 6:00 pm the day of arrival is ‘Day 1’

* The 21-day requirement does not apply to Thai nationals and expat residents.


On-arrival

Protocol for Sandbox travelers

  • Must complete the TM6 Immigration Form 
  • sign the Quarantine Form before proceeding to the Health Control screening point. Children under 12 years of age can use the same form as their parents/guardians
  • Present the required documents
    • Thailand Pass, Arrival date and RT-PCR result
  • Travelers will receive a copy of the affixed Quarantine Form with a QR code indicating the requirement to under the 2 mandatory RT-PCR tests
  • Present the copy of the affixed Quarantine Form and passport to the Immigration. Then be allowed to proceed to a prearranged transfer to the reserved hotel.
  • Upon arrival at the hotel, travellers must present their copy of the affixed Quarantine Form to the hotel staff, then be registered on the COSTE system. Afterwards, travellers must undergo the first RT-PCR test 
  • Receive Negative test result, travelers can enjoy travel activities within a Sandbox for 7 days
    • If testing positive for COVID-19, travellers will be referred to a healthcare facility for appropriate medical treatment, for which the expenses must be covered by the required insurance, or national healthcare coverage for Thais and eligible foreign expatriates
  • On day 5-6 must go to the appointment at the government-designated hospitals/lab centres to undergo their second RT-PCR test
  • Travellers give their copy of affixed Quarantine Form/prepaid RT-PCR testing number to the hospitals/lab centres for reference.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I travel to Samui, Thailand?

Yes, fully vaccinated travelers and accompanying children can travel to Samui without completing mandatory quarantine.

How long must I be vaccinated before I travel to Samui?

You must be fully vaccinated for at least 14 days prior to departure for Thailand.

How much COVID-covering health insurance do I need?

A minimum coverage of USD 50,000

If I am traveling with a child under the age of 18, does he/she need to be fully vaccinated?

Travelers, 12-17 years of age traveling to Thailand unaccompanied by an apparent/guardian must have been vaccinated with at least 1 dose of an approved vaccine. Those traveling with parents are exempt from this vaccination requirement.

If I have a history of COVID-19 infection?

Those previously infected with COVID-19 are considered fully vaccinated if you have received a single dose of COVID-19 vaccine at any time after their recovery. Please be advised that your proof or medical record of COVID-19 recovery must be submitted alongside your single-dose vaccination certificate.
– If you have been fully vaccinated before contracting COVID-19, you are still considered to be fully vaccinated.
– Those who have recovered from COVID-19 within 3 months before traveling to Thailand must present a valid COVID-19 recovery form or medical certificate certifying that they have recovered from COVID-19 within 3 months before travelling or are asymptomatic in case their COVID-19 RT-PCR test shows a positive result.

Can I travel to other parts of Thailand?

Yes, once you have completed your 7-day mandatory stay at a hotel or resort within the Sandbox area, you can travel to any destination in Thailand.

Can I stay in Samui for less than 7 days?

Yes. After a minimum 1-night stay in a SHA+ hotel (awaiting the result of your first RT-PCR test) and after a ‘negative’ test result, you can travel anywhere within the Koh Samui Sandbox area which includes other parts of Samui, Koh Tao, and Koh Pha-ngan. Otherwise, your departure flight must be to an international destination.

Am I allowed to leave my hotel?

Yes, you can travel freely to anywhere in the sandbox area after your first “negative” result.

How many times I must take the RT-PCR test during the stay?

Once upon arrival at the airport and one on ‘Day 5’ or ‘Day 6’ at the hospital

What happens if I get COVID during my trip?

The Hotel’s SHA+ (COVID) Manager will contact the Covid-19 Control Centre of Koh Samui and you will be transferred by hospital ambulance to be treated in the designated hospital
